Mental Capacity Act not properly understood

The learning disabilities charity Mencap says a lack of understanding about the Mental Capacity Act amongst professionals is affecting the lives of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).
The findings come from an independent evaluation into the effectiveness of a ground breaking project called "Involve Me". Click here to learn more about that project.
The evaluation found that, although staff were well meaning and generally had the best interests of service users at heart, "ongoing references by managers and staff to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 is more limited than would be expected".
The evaluation recommended that managers should ensure that all staff are trained in how to use the Mental Capacity Act to ensure that service users are enabled to take as many decisions as possible for themselves. Click here to read that independent evaluation in full.
