Autism Act 2009
The Autism Act was passed in 2009 and became law in January 2010. It applies to England only. It is the first ever disability-specific law in England.
It places an obligation on the Department of Health to produce the first ever Autism Strategy. This strategy was issued on 3rd March 2010 - click here to view it from the Department of Health's website.
The strategy is called "Fulfilling and Rewarding Lives". In it, the Government's vision is that
‘All adults with autism are able to live fulfilling and rewarding lives within a society that accepts and understands them. They can get a diagnosis and access support if they need it, and they can depend on mainstream public services to treat them fairly as individuals, helping them make the most of their talents.’
We can offer training in Autism Awareness, or specifically in what the Autism Act 2009 means for your organisation.
