Dementia qualifications
Impact is currently approved by City & Guilds to deliver the following qualification in dementia awareness:
- The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia
This qualification is brand new, having only been officially launched in January 2011.
Currently 700,000 people in the UK have dementia, and this figure is expected to double over the next few decades. The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia will help to improve health and care services supporting individuals diagnosed with dementia.
The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia
The Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia is aimed at anyone who is working in a paid or voluntary capacity with people who have dementia. This includes people who are working in statutory (including NHS), private and voluntary agencies. Typical job roles would be healthcare/care assistants, support/key workers, family support workers, activities co-ordinators, day centre workers etc.
There are four units:
- Unit DEM 201 - Dementia awareness
- Unit DEM 202 - The person centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
- Unit DEM 205 - Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia
- Unit DEM 207 - Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care
Each unit is assessed by means of a written assignment which is marked by your course tutor.
The entire course can be run over a period of about 4 months. It normally takes place at your venue, and can start and finish whenever is convenient for you. There are usually 6 full day training sessions.
There is usually a gap of around 3-4 weeks between each session, but this is fully negotiable according to your preferences.
All four units are also present in the new Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care, which has replaced the old NVQ in Health & Social Care.
We use the official course materials which were produced for Skills for Care by Jackie Pool Associates, and our trainers/tutors have been trained by Jackie Pool herself.
