Mental Health Qualifications
Impact is currently approved by City & Guilds to deliver two mental health qualifications:
- The Level 3 Certificate in Working in Community Mental Health Care (qualification number 3561)
- The Level 2 Certificate in Community Mental Health Work (qualification number 3061)
The Level 3 Certificate in Working in Community Mental Health Care (qualification number 3561) 
This qualification is aimed at staff, volunteers, users and carers who do not hold a professional qualification in mental health but are involved in the delivery of mental health services.
This includes residential, day care, drop-in services, advocacy, in patient, out-patient, supported housing, supported employment, home and community support.
It is a work based award which offers comprehensive coverage of the core knowledge, skills and values needed by practitioners to deliver effective and safe user-centred services across the broad spectrum of mental health services in the UK.
The new version of the course (from January 2011) contains 8 mandatory units. Each unit is assessed by means of a written assignment. The exams which were present in previous versions of the course have been abolished.
- Unit 1: Understand mental well-being and mental health promotion
- Unit 2: Understand mental health problems
- Unit 3: Understand mental health interventions
- Unit 4: Understand the legal, policy and service framework in mental health
- Unit 5: Understand care and support planning and risk management in mental health
- Unit 6: Use effective communication and build relationships in mental health work
- Unit 7: Enable mental health service users and carers to manage change
- Unit 8: Effective team and joint working in mental health
The course duration depends on you, but is typically about 9-12 months in total. Students are required to attend on average 1 or 2 training days per month over that period.

The Level 2 Certificate in Community Mental Health Work (qualification number 3061)
This qualification is particularly appropriate to rehabilitation workers, health care assistants and community support workers. It provides a framework for an employer's induction programme. It supports career development and is especially suitable for students who have been out of formal education for a considerable length of time.
The Level 2 Certificate contains 5 mandatory units. There is an assignment attached to each unit. At the end of the course there is a multiple choice exam covering all of the 5 units. Candidates must complete all 5 units, plus the exam, in order to pass the course.
- Unit 1: Principles and values of mental health work
- Unit 2: The Experience of Mental Distress
- Unit 3: Effective Communication in Mental Health Work
- Unit 4: Working in a Mental Health Environment
- Unit 5: Developing as a "Mental Health Worker
The course duration depends on you, but is typically about 4-6 months from start to finish. Students would attend on average 1 or 2 training days per month during that time.
